Mara

Once a year, each elemental spirit gets a day to spend wandering the earth as a normal human. This day belongs to water.

The summer solistice, the day of fire, is the longest day of the year. It is also the day Water dreads the most. Most of the element spirits treasure the day they spend as a human. Water has never understood that. She would rather stay underwater where she belongs. So she sits, melancholy, on the banks of a river waiting for the endless sun to go down.

The brightest parts of the otherwise torturous day, is when people come to her river shore and swim, fish and chat with her. They inventively ask her to join them in the water and she always declines. To enter the water would be too tempting for her to swim indefinitely. She always forgets she can't breathe water in human form.

There has never been a time or place, she hasn't been approached by some young male. He will ask for the maiden's name and Water will respond, no matter the language, "Mara. Just Mara. " he will furrow his eyebrows but continue chatting with this beautiful woman he can't believe he found. Chatter continues until the night begins to fall. at sunset he will always ask if she would come with him, either to eat a meal or meet his parents or occasionally something more. Mara will smile and kiss him, while Water will laugh and decline. Then here is where she breaks her cover. Water jumps into the river and never returns, convincing the man he spent the day with a mermaid.
